Intent Statement
Sport, health and fitness is an integral part of every student’s development, well-being and education. Sport is not just about physical excellence, it develops the whole person and provides a platform to build a well rounded young person.
At Cobham Free School we seek to inspire students of all levels of experience to empower themselves to enjoy sport, to seek excellence and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our talented staff and strong links with dedicated local coaching teams enable us to strive to create the best possible environment for pupils to learn and progress across a wide variety of sports. By generating a positive ethos within sport, health and fitness we aim to develop life skills and promote a lifetime involvement in sport and physical activity.
Key Stage 3 - PE
Students in Key Stage 3 follow a broad and varied programme of study that is inclusive of 14 sports. The curriculum is designed to help students develop physically, socially and emotionally whilst detailing how to approach health, fitness and well-being. Participation and enjoyment are key factors whilst we lay the foundations of rules, skill development and tactical awareness for those who will go on to study at GCSE level. A large emphasis is placed on students being reflective about their performance and fitness levels and encouraging them to progress to a higher standard of performance. All students will have one Games Afternoon after lunch lasting 1hr 45mins and one Physical Education lesson lasting 1hr 10 mins each week.
Games Afternoons involve the whole year group and are typically team based sports. Students will be allocated a group based on sporting experience. Students will rotate every four weeks to a different sport. The sports scheduled are as follows:
Football
Rugby
Netball
Basketball
Handball
Rounders/Softball/Cricket
Volleyball
Athletics
Physical Education lessons involve just one class and are typically based on more individual sports. Students will be placed in mixed ability groups depending on the cohort with sports rotating every half term. The sports scheduled are as follows:
Health Related Fitness
Table Tennis
Martial Arts - Boxing/Judo/Fencing (TBC)
Badminton
Gymnastics/Parkour
Couch to 5km
Key Stage 4 - PE
Students in Year 10 follow a programme of study that attempts to meet the passions and interests of the students whilst also providing a varied and balanced curriculum. Lessons are designed to help students develop physically, socially and emotionally whilst detailing how to approach health, fitness and well-being. Gameplay, participation and enjoyment are key factors alongside supporting the development for those submitting sports for assessment at GCSE. All students will have one Physical Education lesson lasting 1 hr 10mins per week.

Extra-curricular opportunities
The PE department organises a range of sports extracurricular activities (Sports ECAs). These are delivered by both CFS PE staff and through external qualified coaches where we have strong links with Cobham Rugby Club and Chelsea Football Club Foundation. These are optional sports sessions that are open to everyone from 4 - 4.45/5pm on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. No need to sign up, just turn up.
In addition, we provide students various opportunities to represent the school across a range of sports in fixtures and competitions that take place across the district, county and on a national level.
