Science Curriculum Overview 2024-25

Junior Intent Statement

At Cobham Free Junior  School we want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them and to foster a sense of wonder about natural phenomena. Our curriculum has been developed by staff to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum from  EYFS  through to Year 6. We are committed to providing a stimulating, engaging and challenging learning environment. Throughout Cobham Free School, children are encouraged to develop and use a range of 'working scientifically' skills including questioning, researching and observing.
To ensure high quality teaching at Cobham Free School we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the school. Teaching is carefully sequenced to ensure a clear progression of substantive and disciplinary knowledge. Each lesson is  designed to explore and build on children's prior knowledge allowing for misconceptions to be addressed effectively.  The use of technology and practical resources are used, when appropriate, to aid teaching and learning allowing children to develop their 'working scientifically' skills through investigations.
Wherever possible, Science is linked to class topics to develop a wider opportunity for learning. At the start of each Science topic, teachers share the knowledge organisers discussing the key vocabulary and areas of knowledge that will be taught in the ongoing weeks and assessed at the end of the topic.
